Research

Our Research is Legendary.

Since the company was founded, MWV’s commitment has been demonstrated across the globe. Our long-standing relationships with conservation organizations, our support of environmental protection projects and our educational programs all keep our lands ahead of the curve in sustainability.

Our objective is fairly uncomplicated. As we manage our forestlands for quality timber, we look for new ideas to better protect ecosystems, manage wildlife, and improve the productivity of the forest. Many others are doing the same. What sets us apart, though, is the history, the breadth and the depth of our efforts.

For instance, in the 1940’s, we established our first experimental forest, which marked the beginning of decades of forest research. Beginning in the 1950s and 1960s, we launched extensive nutrient testing. By studying soil and foliage samples, we were able to customize the nutrition for individual stands of trees, which improved productivity and forest health. In 1986, the company formally began collecting plants for a herbarium. The plants provide vital clues about the healthiness and diversity of MWV forests. Another historic partnership began in 1999, when we teamed up with The Nature Conservancy in a five-year project to jointly survey more than a million acres for endangered plant and animal habitats. It was the first time a forest products company opened all its company land for systematic evaluation by an environmental organization.

Thanks to many years of forest research, we’re constantly improving our forest management practices. Our long-standing relationships with a variety of conservation organizations and universities help us constantly turn up new approaches.

That’s part of it. What else sets us apart?
